The Organizing Can Wait
A colorful collection of vintage radios displayed neatly on built-in shelves, illustrating how thoughtful organization creates space to enjoy the things you love without sacrificing beauty, function, or peace.
What kind of organizing do you feel like you have to get done before you can enjoy your evening? Your summer vacation? Your kids coming home for a visit?
If you're like many of the people I work with, you may have a mental list running in the background. The pantry that needs attention. The cabinet that still isn't organized. The bins that never got labeled. The paperwork waiting on the kitchen counter.
But today, I want to offer you a little bit of permission.
Maybe none of it has to be done before you go enjoy your life.
When We Put Life on Hold
I absolutely love organizing. It's not just my profession—it's something that genuinely brings me joy. I feel calmer in a well-organized home. I love opening a cabinet and knowing exactly what's inside. I love creating systems that make daily life easier.
But over the years, I've noticed something important.
Sometimes people unintentionally put their happiness on hold while waiting for their homes to be "finished."
They tell themselves they'll relax after they organize the garage. They'll invite friends over after they declutter the guest room. They'll fully enjoy their vacation once they've finally labeled every storage bin.
And while organizing can absolutely improve your quality of life, it was never meant to prevent you from living it.
Your Family Won't Remember the Labels
When your children come home, they aren't arriving to inspect your cabinets.
When your friends stop by, they aren't evaluating your storage containers.
When you're sitting on a beach during vacation, the unlabeled tote in the basement isn't following you there.
The truth is that most of the organizing projects in our homes are patient. They wait quietly for us. The clutter isn't going to run away. The disorganized cabinet will still be there next week. The shelf that needs attention isn't keeping score.
What matters most is that you create room for the people, experiences, and memories that make life meaningful.
A beautifully organized home is wonderful. A beautifully lived life is even better.
Progress Is Still Progress
One of the biggest lessons I've learned as a professional organizer is that organizing is not an all-or-nothing activity.
You do not need to complete every project before you deserve rest.
You do not need a perfectly organized home before you deserve joy.
You do not need matching bins, perfect labels, or magazine-worthy closets before you can celebrate your family, enjoy a summer evening, or take a much-needed vacation.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is creating a home that supports your life—not becoming so focused on organizing that you miss the life happening inside that home.
So if you're looking around today and noticing unfinished projects, take a breath. Choose what truly matters. Tackle the organizing when you're ready. And then go enjoy your evening, your vacation, your family, and your memories.
Those moments are worth far more than any perfectly labeled container.
Organizing can be a wonderful gift you give yourself, but so is allowing yourself to enjoy the life you've worked so hard to build. Every small step toward an organized home matters, but so does every laugh around the dinner table, every family visit, and every peaceful summer evening. Give yourself permission to embrace both. The organizing will still be there tomorrow, and that's perfectly okay.
