How to Organize Without Giving Up What You Love

In order to be organized, do you need to be a minimalist?

Absolutely not.

I think this is one of the biggest misconceptions people have about organizing. Many people assume that if they want a tidy, functional home, they have to get rid of almost everything they own. But that's simply not true.

In fact, I'm a professional organizer, and I have quite a few collections of my own. I collect books, artwork, pottery, photographs, scarves, and earrings. These are things that bring me joy, reflect who I am, and add beauty to my life. I don't believe organizing is about living with less just for the sake of having less. I believe it's about living with what you truly love and creating space for it to be enjoyed.

Making Room for What Matters

Over the years, though, I have learned something important.

Even the things we love need boundaries.

As my collections grew, I eventually had to make decisions about how much space I wanted them to occupy in my home. Not because there was anything wrong with having collections, but because I wanted my home to remain functional, peaceful, and easy to maintain.

The reality is that our homes have limits. Our shelves have limits. Our closets have limits. And when our collections grow beyond the space available for them, even beautiful things can begin to feel overwhelming.

That's often where organizing begins—not with getting rid of everything, but with thoughtfully deciding what deserves a place in your space.

Looking at What You Truly Love

If you're feeling overwhelmed but want to keep your collections, try spending some time paying attention to what you're actually using, enjoying, and appreciating.

Which books do you revisit?

Which pieces of artwork catch your eye every day?

Which scarves do you reach for?

Which earrings make you smile when you put them on?

You don't have to use your art the same way you use your spatulas. Not everything in your home has to serve a practical purpose. Beauty has value too.

But it's worth asking yourself: What am I genuinely looking at and loving? What do I want displayed all the time? What would I enjoy rotating into view more often?

When you identify those favorites, they become the heart of your collection.

Surrounded by Beauty and Peace

Once you've identified the pieces you truly treasure, take a gentle look at the items that didn't make that list.

You don't have to rush. You don't have to be harsh with yourself. Simply consider whether those items are still serving a purpose in your life or whether they might bring more joy to someone else.

Organizing isn't about deprivation.

It's about creating enough space for the things you love to shine.

When your collections fit comfortably within your home, they become easier to enjoy. Instead of feeling crowded by your belongings, you get to be surrounded by beauty, memories, and the things that make you uniquely you.

And that is one of my favorite kinds of organizing.

You do not have to become a minimalist to create an organized home. You simply need to be intentional about what you keep and how much space you dedicate to it. When you give your favorite things room to breathe, you create a home that feels both beautiful and peaceful—a place that supports you, reflects you, and welcomes you every day.
