Giving Yourself the Same Grace

Neatly organized garage shelves with storage bins, gardening supplies, and sandals nearby, reflecting the balance of structure, flexibility, and grace that helps organizing projects move forward.

If you've ever found yourself making exceptions to your own carefully thought-out plans, you're in good company. Today, I found myself doing exactly that.

As professional organizers, my team and I have certain guidelines we follow because they help us work safely, efficiently, and comfortably. They're good rules. Rules that exist for a reason. But today reminded me that sometimes flexibility matters just as much as structure.

When the Rules Meet Real Life

I broke a couple of my organizing rules today.

The first one is simple: when you're organizing, wear sturdy clothes, closed-toe shoes, and pants that fit well enough that they won't get in your way while you're moving, lifting, sorting, and reaching.

The second rule is one we follow whenever possible: garage organizing projects are best tackled when temperatures are somewhere between 60 and 80 degrees with lower humidity. Those conditions allow us to work efficiently and comfortably while accomplishing as much as possible.

Today, however, it was 94 degrees.

A client needed help in her garage, and I knew exactly what she needed. I also knew that the project was small enough that I could help her accomplish her goal in under an hour. As someone who grew up in Texas, I know my personal limits pretty well. I know about how long it takes before the heat starts slowing me down.

So instead of my usual organizing attire, I showed up in linen pants and Chacos. Not exactly my standard recommendation.

The Real Goal Was Helping

Sometimes organizing isn't about following a perfect formula. It's about understanding the person in front of you and helping them move forward.

I knew this client had a specific need. I knew we could complete it quickly. Most importantly, I knew how much relief she would feel once it was finished.

So we got to work.

Before long, everything we needed to accomplish in the garage was done. The project was completed, the space was improved, and my client was thrilled with the results.

As I drove home, I found myself thinking less about the rules I had broken and more about the lesson I had learned.

Grace Goes Both Ways

One of the things I tell my clients all the time is to give themselves grace.

If a project takes longer than expected, give yourself grace.

If you need to take breaks, give yourself grace.

If life gets busy, emotions show up, or you simply don't have the energy you thought you would, give yourself grace.

Organizing is not about perfection. It's about creating a life that feels more manageable, more functional, and more peaceful.

Yet sometimes, it's easier to offer that compassion to others than it is to offer it to ourselves.

Today reminded me that I need to follow my own advice.

Giving yourself grace doesn't mean ignoring good habits or abandoning healthy boundaries. It means recognizing when flexibility serves a greater purpose. It means understanding that sometimes the goal is progress, not perfection. It means trusting your experience, adjusting when necessary, and moving forward with kindness toward yourself.

That's true whether you're organizing a garage, a closet, a filing cabinet, or simply navigating a busy season of life.

Every organizing project teaches something beyond where to place the bins or how to sort the shelves. Sometimes the lesson is about compassion. Sometimes it's about flexibility. And sometimes it's a reminder that the same grace we so freely offer others is something we deserve, too.

The next time your plans need to shift or your process looks a little different than expected, remember that progress still counts. Small steps still matter. And giving yourself kindness along the way may be one of the most important organizing skills of all.
