What to Do When You're Too Busy to Get Organized
Life gets busy. Between work, family, appointments, and all the unexpected things that pop up, even thinking about organizing can feel overwhelming. But if you're feeling scattered, stuck, or stretched too thin, this is exactly when a little intentional organizing can make all the difference.
Here are three simple ways to make space in your schedule and your home—even when life feels too full:
1. Pause and Look at Your Calendar
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and too busy, you likely are. Take a good look at your calendar.
Ask yourself:
◈ What can be deferred until a later date?
◈ What can be delegated to someone who has the time and talent to do what is needed?
◈ What can be deleted because your are you doing out of habit, not necessity or from joy?
As a professional organizer, I often remind clients that the first step in any organizing project is making time for it. Even if it’s just an hour. Clear some breathing room in your week. Say no to one thing. Reschedule something that isn’t urgent.
Remember: Time is our most valuable resource.
2. Organize the Essentials
Don’t try to do it all. Focus on what you actually need to get through the next few weeks. That might mean:
◈ Laying out school clothes for the week
◈ Pre-packing tote bags with sports gear or work materials
◈ Creating a grab & go bin near the door for your keys, purse and sunglasses
◈ Using labels so everyone knows where things belong
Setting up simple organizing systems can keep your space functional—even if it’s not picture-perfect. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s peace of mind.
3. Find the Joy in the Moment
Maybe this season is full of milestones, holidays, visits from family, or big transitions. All of those things are worth celebrating.
Your home doesn’t have to be fully organized to enjoy your life.
Take a breath. Listen to your favorite music. Put your feet up. You’re allowed to enjoy this moment, even if there’s a pile of papers on the counter.
You deserve a home that feels calm and a schedule that feels manageable. You don’t have to overhaul your entire house to make progress.
Professional organizing is about making life easier, creating clarity, and supporting your goals—one step at a time.
Even when you’re busy, those small steps count.
