Time to Organize End-of-School-Year Items

Before the weeks fly by and in order to not trip over it all summer, now is the perfect time to help your kids organize the supplies, artwork, papers, uniforms, etc. that have come home for the summer.

If you're a student, parent, teacher, grandparent, or anyone who cares for children through the school year, chances are this is one of the biggest transitions of your year. Your home, vehicles, classrooms and offices could likely use some attention. Think: backpacks, totes, car floors, lockers, baskets, and bins overflowing with old lunch bags, snack wrappers, crumpled permission slips, half-used notebooks, and long-forgotten school supplies.

This is a golden opportunity for a quick but powerful decluttering & organizing session. Why now? Because everything’s still relatively fresh in your mind. You know what items were actually used, what never left the bag/closet, and what’s still in good shape for next year. Tackling it now means you’ll be ahead of the game—and avoid buying a bunch of duplicates in the fall.

It’s also a great time to find and clean lunch boxes, waterbottles, gym bags to protect them from mold and mildew. Even as a professional organizer who organized the supplies regularly, I often found snack cups or bags in the deep recesses of the minivan when my kiddos were little. The trick is to catch it early, clean it out, and avoid a bigger mess later.

One unexpected bonus of this seasonal tidy-up? You might find overlooked flyers, handouts, or school emails with info on summer camps, enrichment programs, or fun community events. That kind of discovery can turn an average summer into an awesome one.

So carve out some time this week to:

Toss the trash
Donate what’s still useful but no longer needed by your family
Sort and store what you’ll need next year

Your future self will thank you. You’ll save time, money, and a whole lot of stress come fall.

And hey—if you’d rather not tackle it alone, just reach out. Helping people get back on track with their home organization goals is what I do best.
