Declutter Your Calendar Before You Declutter Your Home
Have you ever looked around your home and thought, “I know I can get this organized… I just need the time”?
If that thought has crossed your mind, I want you to know—you’re not alone. I hear this all the time. And honestly, it makes perfect sense. Most people don’t lack motivation. They don’t lack ability. What they lack is space on the calendar to actually do the work.
Because when your schedule is overflowing, your home doesn’t just stay cluttered… it starts to feel like it’s waiting on you. And that can be heavy.
The Hidden Reason Home Organizing Feels So Hard
Here’s something many people don’t realize: sometimes the first space that needs organizing isn’t a closet or a kitchen.
Sometimes it’s your calendar.
You may truly want to tackle your home. You may even feel confident you can do it yourself—if you can just set aside the time. But then you open your calendar and it’s packed. Appointments. Work deadlines. Family responsibilities. Volunteer commitments. Errands. Social events. Favors. Tasks. More tasks.
And suddenly organizing your home becomes “something I’ll get to later.”
But later doesn’t come when your schedule is already filled to the brim. A cluttered calendar creates a cluttered life. And in that kind of pace, home organizing doesn’t feel peaceful—it feels impossible.
Declutter the Calendar First
In the organizing world, we always begin with decluttering. That’s step one. And the same rule applies here.
If your calendar is too full to organize your home, then your next best step is to declutter your calendar—gently and intentionally.
Start by looking at what’s coming up and asking yourself three simple questions:
◈ What doesn’t need to happen at all?
What is on your calendar that could disappear and there would be no real consequence for anyone?
◈ What doesn’t need to happen anytime soon?
Some things truly matter, but they don’t have to happen right now. And right now… you need breathing room.
◈ What doesn’t need to happen by me?
This one is powerful. If you’re the person who always does it, it might feel automatic. But automatic doesn’t always mean necessary.
This isn’t about guilt. It’s about permission. Permission to protect your time the same way you protect your family, your home, and your health.
Postpone, Delegate, and Make Room for Your Home
Once you identify what’s crowding your calendar, you can start making space in practical ways.
Some things can be postponed.
Some things can be removed.
And some things can be delegated—because it truly doesn’t all need to be carried by you.
You’d be amazed what happens when you simply take a few unnecessary commitments off your calendar. It’s like clearing a countertop—you can finally see what matters again.
Then I want you to do something important: put “Get Organized” on your calendar.
Not as a vague wish. Not as a “someday.” But as a real appointment. Because your home matters. Your peace matters. And your time matters.
When you create space in your schedule, you’re creating space in your life. And that’s when organizing becomes possible—not rushed, not stressful, not overwhelming… but steady and supportive.
Organizing isn’t only about creating a tidy home. It’s about creating a life that feels calmer and easier to live in. Every time you make room on your calendar for what truly matters, you’re choosing peace. And every drawer you open with ease is a small act of self-care—one that reminds you that you deserve a home (and a schedule) that supports you.
