Your Personality Belongs in Your Organizing System

Someone asked me a question today that I absolutely loved: “What personality types or temperaments do you usually help?”

It made me stop and think because, after years of helping people declutter and organize their homes, I’ve learned something important. Organizing is never just about the stuff. It’s about the people who live with the stuff—their personalities, their schedules, their interests, their energy, and the way they naturally move through life.

And when we understand the person, we can create organizing systems that truly support them.

The People Who Want to Get Things Done

I think I’ll have to look at some data to know for certain, but my first thought was that I hear quite often from people with choleric and sanguine temperaments.

Choleric personalities tend to be strong, decisive leaders. They have that fiery, get-it-done energy, and when they decide they want something to change, they are ready to make it happen.

They’re often comfortable asking for help because they recognize that bringing in an expert can move them toward their goal more efficiently. They don’t necessarily want to spend their limited time figuring out every organizing detail themselves. They want results.

They want to walk into their home or office and see a real difference. They want the clutter addressed, the space organized, systems established, and everything styled in a way that feels beautiful and functional.

And I love helping make that vision come to fruition.

Systems for the Social Butterflies

Then there are my sanguines—the butterflies.

These are often the social people with a lot going on. And I mean a lot.

They may have several hobbies, different groups of friends, activities, events, projects, and interests pulling them in all sorts of exciting directions. They like to go, go, go.

Because they’re busy living their lives, they may simply spend less time at home tending to the everyday systems that keep a space running smoothly. Their homes can need a little extra TLC—not because they’re doing anything wrong, but because their energy and attention are naturally going somewhere else.

That’s where good organizing becomes so helpful.

Instead of creating a complicated system that requires them to change who they are, we can create systems that support that social-butterfly life. Things can be easy to find, easy to put away, and easy to maintain so their home supports everything else they love doing.

That’s one of the things I find so interesting about professional organizing. The “best” organizing system isn’t necessarily the prettiest one or the one you saw online. It’s the one that works for the people who actually live there.

Organize for the People in Your Home

That question about personality types reminded me of something I think is incredibly important when you’re trying to organize your home.

Think about who lives there.

What does each person need from the space? What feels overwhelming to them? What comes naturally? What doesn’t? Where do things tend to pile up? What would make getting out the door easier? What would make coming home feel calmer?

And, especially in a household with several people, how can we create systems that work well for everybody?

Your home doesn’t need to function like anyone else’s home.

An organizing system that works beautifully for a highly structured person may feel completely unnatural to someone who is constantly on the go. A system that makes perfect sense to one family member may be difficult for another person to maintain.

That’s why organizing is so personal.

When we stop trying to fit people into organizing systems and start creating organizing systems around people, something shifts. Maintaining the home can become easier. There’s less friction. Things have places that make sense. And the home begins to support the life happening inside it.

You don’t need a different personality to have an organized home. You need systems that understand the personality you already have. Whether you’re a decisive get-it-done leader, a busy social butterfly, or somewhere entirely different on the temperament spectrum, your home can be organized in a way that feels natural to you. And every system that makes your day a little easier is progress worth celebrating.
