Why Room Names Matter
Moving boxes and cherished household items symbolize the emotional transition of preparing a longtime home for its next chapter.
If you've ever had to leave a home filled with years of memories, you know that packing boxes is only part of the process. Sometimes the hardest part isn't deciding what to keep or what to let go of. It's the emotions that come with saying goodbye.
One of the small but surprisingly powerful techniques I share with families is something that almost anyone can use. It's simple, gentle, and often helps make a difficult transition feel just a little more manageable.
A Small Shift That Can Make a Big Difference
When a family is preparing to sell a home, I sometimes encourage them to stop referring to it as "our home" or "Mom and Dad's house."
Instead, we begin calling it by its street name.
Maybe it's the Main Street house. Maybe it's the Second Avenue house.
It's a subtle change, but words have power. Referring to the property by its address can help create just enough emotional distance to make the next decisions feel a little less overwhelming.
When the decision has already been made to move forward, the house begins to shift from being the center of your memories to becoming a valuable asset that will help support the next chapter of your life. That doesn't erase the love or the memories. It simply creates space for what's next.
The Right Name Can Also Make the Work Easier
Interestingly, names become just as important from an organizing perspective.
When my team is helping clear a home—especially one with several thousand square feet—we need to communicate quickly and clearly. Every organizer needs to know exactly where something belongs or where the next task begins.
Some room names are obvious: the kitchen, the primary bedroom, the living room.
But many families have names they've used for years that instantly tell everyone exactly which space they're talking about.
The striped closet.
The study.
The second kitchen.
This week alone, we've heard some wonderfully unique room names that made us smile. As soon as we learn those names and make sure every organizer on the team knows them, everything becomes more efficient. Questions are answered faster. Items end up in the right place. The project moves more smoothly, and the family doesn't have to stop and explain every direction.
Sometimes the familiar name is exactly what keeps everyone on the same page.
Choose the Words That Serve You Best
What I love about organizing is that there isn't one right answer for everyone.
Sometimes using the familiar family name for a room brings comfort and helps everyone work together efficiently.
Other times, choosing a more neutral name makes the emotional side of the transition feel a little lighter.
The goal isn't to erase your memories. The goal is to support you through a season of change with as much peace and clarity as possible.
Whether you're labeling boxes, identifying rooms that are ready for the next phase, or simply finding language that helps you move forward, remember that even the smallest changes can make a meaningful difference.
Every transition has its own pace, and every family deserves a process that honors both the practical work and the emotions that come with it.
