When a Loved One Leaves a Home Behind

If you’ve ever stood in a loved one’s home after they’ve passed away and wondered, How are we ever going to go through all of this?—you are not alone. There may be furniture, clothing, photographs, paperwork, collections, kitchen items, tools, keepsakes, and a lifetime of memories in every room. And at the same time, you may be grieving, supporting other family members, making decisions, and simply trying to get through the day.

One of the questions we receive is, “We’ve had a death in the family. Can you help us divest ourselves of the entire estate?”

Start With the Situation, Not the Stuff

When I meet with a family after a loss, I don’t want the first conversation to be about boxes and donation piles. Before we begin sorting through the physical belongings, I want to understand the circumstances surrounding the estate.

One of the first things I ask is about the timeline.

Do you have the luxury of allowing some time to pass? Can you pause, grieve, spend time together as a family, and deal with the belongings later?

Or is there a reason the home needs to be cleared more quickly? Perhaps it needs to be sold, turned over, renovated, or prepared for another family member.

There is no one right timeline for every family. Knowing what your timeline looks like simply helps us build a plan that fits your real life.

Know What Is Possible

Another helpful step is finding out what is permitted where the home is located.

For example, can you hold an estate sale, an onsite sale, or a yard sale in that neighborhood or community? Are there homeowners association rules, building restrictions, or local requirements that affect what can happen at the property?

That doesn’t necessarily mean I am recommending that you hold a sale. Every estate is different, and the best solution depends on the family, the belongings, the goals, and the amount of time available.

Sometimes an estate buyer may be helpful. Sometimes a haul-off company is needed. Other projects may involve packers, movers, donation services, consignment professionals, or other specialists.

Part of our job is helping you understand what needs to happen and which professionals may be able to help accomplish it.

Identify the People Who Need a Voice

Before decisions begin, it is also important to understand who the stakeholders are.

Who needs to be included in the conversation?

There may be siblings, adult children, grandchildren, an executor, a surviving spouse, or other family members whose wishes need to be considered. Knowing this early can make the process much calmer.

Once we understand the timeline, the environment, the inventory, and the people involved, we can begin creating a thoughtful plan.
