What I’m Really Looking for in Your Home

Professional organizer meets with a client in a lived-in living room during a home organizing assessment.

If you’ve ever thought about hiring a professional organizer but found yourself looking around your home and thinking, Oh no, I need to clean up before they come, I want to reassure you right away.

You don’t.

When I come to your home for an assessment because you’re interested in expert home organizing services, I’m looking for some very specific things. But whether you’re a good housekeeper isn’t one of them. How tidy your home is isn’t one of them either.

And I am certainly not coming into your home to shame, blame, guilt, or judge you.

I’m coming to understand you, your home, and what it will take to help you reach your goals.

I’m Not Looking for a Spotless House

Let’s get this part out of the way first because I know it can be a source of anxiety.

Please do not clean your house for me.

When you schedule an assessment, we’ll send you a “before our arrival” note explaining anything we do need you to have in place before we come. What it will not say is that your home needs to be spick-and-span or spotless.

Your disorganization is my job security! Organizing homes is what I do.

I have walked into all kinds of homes, at all kinds of stages, belonging to people in all kinds of seasons of life. A home can become difficult to manage for so many reasons. Life gets busy. Families change. Work gets demanding. Children grow. Health and energy fluctuate. We inherit belongings. We move. We renovate. We make decisions for another day, and eventually all of those “another days” start taking up space.

There is no judgment in any of that.

When I walk through your door, I am not there to evaluate how well you have been keeping house.

I’m not looking to judge you. I’m looking to serve you.

What I Am Looking for Is Readiness

One of the most important things I’m paying attention to during an assessment is readiness.

Are you ready to get your home organized?

That doesn’t mean you have every answer. It doesn’t mean you’re excited about every decision ahead of you. And it certainly doesn’t mean you’re ready to part with everything another person might consider unnecessary.

It means you’re ready to begin making the decisions that will move you toward the home you want.

Because while my team and I can do a tremendous amount of the physical work, there is also mental and emotional work involved in organizing.

We can carry the boxes.

We can pull everything out, sort it, categorize it, move it, contain it, arrange it, and put it away.

But you are the one carrying the history, memories, relationships, expectations, habits, and emotions connected to many of those things.

Sometimes getting organized means letting go of a physical object. Sometimes it means letting go of an old idea about how a room is supposed to function. Sometimes it means changing a habit that worked beautifully ten years ago but no longer works for the life you’re living today.

That’s why readiness matters.

The goal isn’t to make decisions simply for the sake of getting rid of things. The goal is to make thoughtful decisions that move you closer to a home that looks, feels, and functions the way you want it to.

Your Most Important Resource May Be Trust

Of course, organizing requires resources.

There is a financial investment. There is a time investment. And there needs to be enough space in your life for the decision-making that comes with the process.

But one of the most important resources you can bring to an organizing project is trust.

Can you trust us to execute your vision using your criteria?

That distinction matters.

We aren’t coming into your home to impose our idea of what your home needs to look like. We want to learn what matters to you.

During an assessment, I’ll ask questions. Sometimes quite a few questions.

What is important to you in this room?

What frustrates you about the way it functions now?

What needs to be easy to reach?

What do you use every day?

What do other members of your household need?

Where do you have complete freedom to make decisions, and where are you sharing space with someone whose needs or preferences are different from yours?

That information helps us develop criteria for the project.

Your criteria become our guide.

In some areas, you may get exactly what you want. In another space, you may be collaborating with a spouse, child, roommate, parent, or another family member. There may be places where everyone gives a little and gets a little.

That’s not failure. That’s what it looks like to create a functional home for real people.

We’re Working Toward Your Version of Organized

Professional organizing is not about transforming your home into someone else’s Pinterest board.

It is about helping your home support your life.

That’s what I’m looking for when I come for an assessment.

I’m looking at your goals. Your readiness. Your resources. Your decision-making needs. The people who share your home. The places where you feel stuck. And the places where a thoughtful organizing system could make everyday life feel lighter.

We’re figuring out what needs to happen between where things are today and where you want them to be.

And then, together, we create a path to get there.

You do not need to have everything figured out before we arrive. You don’t need to hide the clutter or apologize for the condition of your home. You simply need to be willing to show us where you are and talk with us about where you want to go.

An organized home isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating spaces that make your everyday life easier—spaces where you can find what you need, use what you love, make decisions with less stress, and move through your home with more ease.

That transformation begins long before the last container is placed on a shelf. It begins with feeling safe enough to say, This is where I am. This is what isn’t working. And this is how I would like my home to feel.

From there, we can help.
