The Joy We Find Together

If you’ve ever opened a box of family keepsakes and found yourself stopping to read every little note, I understand. Those things hold stories. Sometimes, making room to enjoy those stories is one of the loveliest parts of organizing. A recent basement storeroom project reminded me of that in such a sweet way.
A Basement Full of Memories
I was getting a client’s donations organized while she and her two older teenage daughters went through memorabilia, storage items, and arts and crafts supplies. Both daughters had stayed home that day to help their mother.
And they were having so much fun.
They were finding treasures, reading notes they had written to one another, and looking at baby clothes. I could hear them saying, “Oh, I remember this!” and “Tell me more about this.”
It was enchanting to listen to. As my team and I worked, their memories became part of the conversation around us.
Then I heard their mother say, “I love it when you all are here.”
My heart was so happy. I thought she was talking to her daughters. What a wonderful thing for them to hear while they were spending this time together.
A Lovely Little Surprise
When I turned around to take something to her, she was looking right at me.
“Oh,” I said, “you love it when we’re here?”
“Yes! You guys are so great to work with. We’re getting so much done, and you make this part really fun.”
That meant so much to me because helping a project feel manageable is a big part of what we do.

Leave Room for the Stories
If you’re getting ready to organize your own keepsakes, try beginning with one small box or one category, such as handwritten notes. Give yourself a manageable place to start.
As you look through it, consider which pieces you most enjoy seeing and sharing. You might invite a family member to join you, if that feels comfortable. Sometimes an item becomes even more meaningful when someone tells the story behind it.
And if you stop to read a note or remember the baby who once wore those tiny clothes, that can be part of the process. Progress can include understanding what you want to keep and why.
That day, we were getting so much done, and a mother and her daughters were enjoying their memories together. Those are the moments I love helping make possible.
