The Beautiful Things Already Waiting for You
Vintage baskets and antique wooden boxes arranged on a decluttered console.
If you’ve ever felt like getting organized means heading straight to the store for new baskets, bins, and containers, I understand the temptation. Beautiful organizing products can be fun. But one of my favorite parts of the organizing process happens before we buy a single thing. We declutter first. And sometimes, tucked underneath everything we no longer need, we find exactly what we were looking for all along.
Look at What You Already Have
I was working with a client recently, and as we decluttered, we began uncovering some really beautiful things.
There were lovely baskets and useful bins. A couple of the baskets were vintage. We found antique wooden boxes that were absolutely beautiful—and they hadn’t been seen in years and years.
They had simply become surrounded by other things.
As we cleared away what was no longer being used, these special pieces started appearing again. It felt a little like rediscovering treasures in her own home.
And what I loved most was that they weren’t just beautiful. They were useful.
Decluttering Gives Your Favorite Things Room to Work
This is one of the reasons I love encouraging our clients to go through the decluttering phase before we start purchasing organizing products.
When we give ourselves the opportunity to see what is already there, we often discover containers, baskets, boxes, trays, and other pieces that can serve us beautifully in the life we’re living now.
And there is something especially meaningful about using what already belongs in your home.
The antique wooden box you’ve had for years has a history. The vintage basket has a warmth and character that a brand-new container may never have. These pieces are completely unique to your household.
Once the extra things surrounding them are gone, they can become part of the home again instead of something hidden away inside it.
Make Space Before You Add More
Organizing doesn’t always begin by adding something.
Sometimes it begins by creating a little breathing room.
Before buying containers for a space, take some time to see what happens as you declutter. Open the cabinets. Look through the shelves. Pull out the baskets that have been tucked behind other things. You may find that you already own something beautiful and functional that simply hasn’t had the opportunity to do its job.
That was the wonderful part of this particular project. My client was so happy to let go of the things she no longer needed because now she could actually use these beautiful pieces for the things she is using.
That is such a simple shift, but it can completely change the way a home feels.
Your home doesn’t have to be filled with brand-new organizing products to feel organized, beautiful, and intentional. Sometimes the loveliest solution has been there all along, quietly waiting to be uncovered. Decluttering gives us the space to see what we have, appreciate what we love, and put those things back into service in a way that supports our lives today. And every time something useful and meaningful gets to shine again, that feels like a little win worth celebrating.
