Start With What You Need
Woman unpacking a moving box in her new home, focusing on essential items first to reduce overwhelm and create an organized start.
If you've ever stood in the middle of a room surrounded by moving boxes and wondered where in the world to begin, you're not alone. Moving into a new home is exciting, but it can also feel surprisingly overwhelming. When every box seems equally important, it's easy to freeze before you've really gotten started.
I met with a wonderful client recently who hired me as her organizing consultant because she wanted to unpack her new home herself. Throughout her life, she'd been accustomed to having much of that work done for her, but this move represented something different. She was downsizing her home, her budget, and her lifestyle after retirement, and she wanted to prove to herself that she could do it.
She didn't need someone to unpack every box. She simply needed a strategy.
When Everything Feels Important
As we walked through her home, she showed me the room where she'd become completely stuck. Boxes surrounded her, and she wasn't sure which one to open next.
Instead of focusing on the mountain of belongings waiting to be unpacked, I encouraged her to think about something much simpler.
We started with the essentials.
Your bathroom. Your bedroom. Your kitchen.
Those are the spaces that allow you to comfortably live in your home from day one. Once those rooms are functional, you can shower, sleep well, prepare meals, and begin to settle into your new routine.
Everything else can wait.
Your library, home office, décor, book collection, costume jewelry, holiday decorations—those things absolutely deserve attention. They simply don't have to be unpacked during the first half day or even the first week.
Sometimes the greatest gift you can give yourself is permission to postpone the nonessential.
A Different Way to Look at Unpacking
As we talked, I remembered that my client loved camping.
I smiled and said, "Think of this move like a camping trip."
When you're camping, you don't bring your entire house. You focus on what you truly need for today. Everything else stays packed away.
That simple comparison completely changed her perspective.
I encouraged her to look at each box label before opening it. If it said "Christmas Decorations," "Books," "Décor," or anything she wouldn't realistically need during the next month, I suggested she simply skip it for now and move to the next box.
Together, we unpacked a few carefully chosen boxes, organized her kitchen, and set up one bedroom. More importantly, we created a system she could confidently continue on her own.
Instead of feeling buried by hundreds of decisions, she only had to make the next right one.
Progress Creates Peace
One of the biggest misconceptions about organizing is that everything has to happen at once.
It doesn't.
Whether you're unpacking after a move, decluttering your home, or organizing one room that's been bothering you for years, it's perfectly okay to work in phases.
Start with what you need.
Then move on to what makes daily life easier.
After that, you can focus on the things that simply bring you joy.
For this client, we'll meet again for phase two. She may decide to continue unpacking herself, ask me to coach her through the next steps, or have my team come in and help finish everything quickly. There isn't one right way to organize a home. The right approach is the one that fits your goals, your budget, your energy, and your season of life.
When you stop trying to tackle everything at once, something wonderful happens—you can finally take a deep breath.
Organizing isn't about racing to the finish line. It's about creating a home that supports you one thoughtful step at a time. Every box you unpack with intention is one less decision weighing on your mind. Little by little, your house begins to feel like home, and the overwhelm gives way to comfort, confidence, and peace.
