Sometimes We Need to Reorganize Our Lives

Have you ever known exactly how to manage your home and your life—and then suddenly found that the things that once came easily just… don’t? Your routines slip. Your checklist doesn’t get finished. Little things start piling up. You know something needs to change, but you aren’t quite sure what kind of help to ask for.

I recently received a text from a former client that simply said, “Pinky, I need you, but I’m not sure exactly what to ask for.”

And sometimes, that is the perfect place to begin.

When Life Changes the Way Your Home Works

A couple of years ago, my team and I organized this client’s entire condo. It was beautiful when we finished, and she maintained it beautifully.

She is a very organized person. She’s practical, proactive, and accustomed to managing her life well.

Then, this past December, her husband passed away.

Since then, she has experienced tremendous grief, medical challenges, and the uncertainty that comes with wondering what the next chapter of life will look like. She told me she was struggling to complete even basic tasks.

Her home wasn’t terribly disorganized. That wasn’t really the problem.

She simply wasn’t getting things done the way she wanted to anymore, and because that was so unlike her, she didn’t understand what was happening or even know what to ask us to do.

She just knew she needed help.

So I told her, “Absolutely. Let me come out. We’ll have a conversation, you can show me what you’re dealing with, and we’ll figure it out together.”

Sometimes Organizing Starts With Listening

When I arrived, I didn’t begin by opening cabinets or making a list of things to declutter.

I listened.

She told me about what she had been through. We talked about her husband, her grief, her health, and the changes of the past year. We talked about where she is now and what she needs from her home moving forward.

And slowly, the answer became clear.

She needs some body doubling—someone there beside her while she works through tasks that feel harder to begin on her own. She needs some coaching and encouragement. She needs us to reset areas of her condo that had been arranged around caring for her husband and no longer serve the same purpose.

And because she has experienced health challenges of her own, I also want to make some practical changes that will help her move through her home more safely and comfortably. One of those is eliminating the need for step stools wherever we can.

This isn’t about coming in and “fixing” a disorganized home.

It’s about looking at the life she is living today and helping her home support that life.

Your Home Can Change With You

That conversation was beautiful, and I think it was eye-opening for her.

She kept coming back to the fact that she hadn’t known what to ask for.

This is a brilliant, capable woman with strong practical skills who has managed her home and her life beautifully for years. But she has also experienced enormous change in a relatively short period of time.

Sometimes the systems that worked perfectly for one season of life simply don’t fit the next one.

That doesn’t mean we failed at organizing.

It means life changed.

A loss, an illness, a move, aging, a new job, children leaving home, caregiving, or any other major transition can change what we need from our surroundings. The goal isn’t to force ourselves back into an old routine. Sometimes the kinder and more effective choice is to create new systems around the person we are and the life we are living now.

And you don’t have to know exactly what those systems are before asking for help.

You can simply begin with, “Something isn’t working anymore.”

That is enough.

One of the most important things we do as professional organizers isn’t organizing someone’s belongings. It’s listening closely enough to understand what they need their home to do for them now.

Sometimes we have to help people reorganize their priorities and reorganize their goals before we can reorganize their homes. When we do that with compassion, we can create spaces that feel easier, safer, calmer, and more supportive of whatever comes next.

Your home is allowed to change because your life has changed. And sometimes, a little help finding that new rhythm can make home feel like home again.
