Sometimes the Hardest Part Is Starting

If you’ve ever looked around your home and felt unsure where to begin, I want you to know how often I hear that feeling from my clients. Maybe it’s a wardrobe that needs editing, a move to prepare for, or toys that have gradually taken over the living room. Before we even begin, the project can take up so much space in your mind. And sometimes, once we have a little support and a plan, the thing that felt so hard becomes easier than we imagined.

A Little Strategy Makes Room to Begin

Many of the things my clients ask for help with are things they’ve never done before, or haven’t done very often. Packing a household. Unpacking into a new space. Deciding what to keep and creating places where those belongings are easy to find and put away.

Of course there are questions. Where do we start? What supplies will we need? How much time will this take?

Part of my job is to help make those questions manageable. We consider the timing, gather the right supplies, and bring in the help the project needs. Then we begin with one clear step.

For a wardrobe, that might mean starting with one category of clothing. For toys, it might mean gathering similar items together before deciding what containers will work. You don’t have to figure out the whole house at once.

I see the relief that comes with getting started every day. Recently, I had an opportunity to bring that lesson home for myself.

Seventeen Minutes and a Fresh Perspective

I needed to renew my driver’s license, and I had already encountered some obstacles trying to schedule an appointment and get through on the phone. Those approaches were taking time without moving me forward.

So I thought, “You know what? Let’s get really strategic.”

I decided to go after school had started, thinking that students who needed permits or licenses might be back in class. I also chose a time away from the first-thing-in-the-morning and lunchtime rushes.

And it was such a wonderful experience.

Seventeen minutes. In and out.

Yes, I timed it. Organizers are often productive people, too, and we notice these things!

That timing won’t work the same way for every visit, of course. But on that day, a small change in my approach made a task I’d been concerned about feel surprisingly simple.

Home organizing can unfold that way, too. Choosing a time when you have some energy, having supplies nearby, or working alongside someone who can guide the decisions can make beginning feel much more approachable.

I Brought Mama With Me

There was another part of that visit that meant a great deal to me.

I wore my mother’s scarf. I wanted Mama to come with me.

When we renew our driver’s licenses, we also make sure we’re registered as organ donors. That carries a very personal meaning in my family. When my sister was killed, her organs helped so many people.

Wearing Mama’s scarf, I thought about Peggy, about my mother, and about the fragility and sacredness of life. I felt grateful for my family and friends, and for the opportunity I have to help people through my work.

An ordinary errand held all of that.

It also reminded me how meaningful a belonging can be. A scarf can be something you wear and a way to feel close to someone you love. When I help people organize their homes, I make room for those connections. We’re working with the things that hold their stories, as well as the things that help everyday life run more smoothly.

If something feels really hard right now, you don’t have to see every step before taking the first one. Sometimes a little planning opens the door. Sometimes asking for help does.
