Sometimes the Best Organizing Rule Is Knowing When to Break One
Bright, organized kitchen and dining area with clear countertops and natural light.
If you’ve ever had one of those days when your normal routines simply didn’t happen, you’re in good company. I believe routines and household systems are incredibly helpful. They give us structure, reduce decision fatigue, and help our homes function more smoothly. But I also believe something just as important: knowing when it makes sense to break the rules.
The Rules That Keep My Home Running
In my own home, I have routines that help everything stay on track. I like getting up at a certain time. I usually empty the dishwasher before I leave the house. I have rhythms around meals, tidying, and taking care of the things that keep our household functioning.
Those little routines matter.
They prevent small tasks from piling up, and they create a sense of ease because I don’t have to reinvent the day every morning. I already know what works.
But recently, I broke at least three of my own rules in one day.
We had storms during the night, and the cats were having a difficult time settling down. Between checking on them and waking up every time I saw another flash of lightning, I simply didn’t get enough sleep.
By morning, I knew I needed to make some adjustments.
Giving Myself Permission to Adjust
Once the storms had passed, I let myself sleep a little later.
That meant breaking my normal rule about what time I get up.
Sleeping later also meant I didn’t have enough time to empty the dishwasher before I left the house, which is another routine I usually follow.
Then I started thinking ahead.
I knew that when I came home, I wanted enough energy to check on the cats, empty the dishwasher, straighten the house, and get myself back into a comfortable rhythm. I also knew I probably wasn’t going to feel like cooking much of a dinner.
So I broke another rule.
I went through a drive-through.
And do you know what happened?
The house still ended up tidy. The dishwasher got emptied. The cats were settled. I got caught up on what mattered, and I was able to go to bed early and give my body some of the rest it had missed the night before.
That felt like success to me.
Your Organizing Systems Are There to Support You
This is one of the beautiful things about household rules and organizing systems.
They are not designed to be followed perfectly at all times, no matter what is happening around you.
They are designed to give you structure most of the time.
A good organizing system helps you understand what you need, what the other people—or pets—in your household need, and what typically helps your home function well.
Then life happens.
There are storms. Someone gets sick. You have an unusually busy workday. The kids need something unexpected. You didn’t sleep well. You are simply tired.
That doesn’t mean your organizing system has failed.
Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is intentionally adjust the system for the day, knowing you can return to your normal rhythm afterward.
And occasionally, breaking a rule teaches you something. Maybe the rule no longer fits your life. Maybe your household has changed. Maybe there is an easier way to accomplish the same goal.
That is valuable information too.
Organizing is not about creating a home where everything happens perfectly every day. It is about creating enough structure that when life gets a little messy, you know how to find your way back. Give yourself permission to use your routines as tools rather than measuring sticks. Sometimes progress looks like emptying the dishwasher first thing in the morning. Sometimes it looks like getting extra sleep, picking up dinner on the way home, caring for the creatures you love, and starting fresh tomorrow. A home that supports your life is always more important than perfectly following the rules.
