Making Room for Who You Are Now
Bright, uncluttered living room with a tan leather sofa, houseplants, and open space to relax.
Have you ever looked around your home and realized you’re trying to make room for a new chapter while keeping everything from the chapters before it? Maybe you’re preparing for a move, welcoming a baby, or creating more time to travel. There’s something lovely ahead, and you’re wondering where it will all fit. When I’m organizing with clients, this is often where our most meaningful conversations begin.
Your Life Is Changing
We talk about the things they used to do, the activities they once enjoyed, and the belongings that helped make those parts of life possible.
And then we talk about what’s happening now.
A room that once held a hobby may be becoming a nursery. A move may mean choosing what belongs in a smaller home. More travel may bring a desire for a home that’s easier to care for between adventures.
It’s natural to want to keep all the things that supported your life before while adding everything you need for what comes next. Those belongings hold memories, possibilities, and pieces of who you’ve been.
Sometimes, though, making room begins with giving yourself permission to change your mind.
Start With Your Mind and Calendar
Before we decide what fits in a closet, I like to step back and consider a different question.
What do you have room for in your life?
What has space in your mind? What has space on your calendar? What do you want to give your energy to now?
You may still love the idea of a hobby and realize you’d rather spend your afternoons doing something else. You may appreciate a collection while feeling ready to care for fewer pieces. Both feelings can exist together.
Try asking yourself, gently: “If I were choosing today, would I make room for this?”
There’s no need to rush the answer. Simply noticing what feels true can help you make a thoughtful decision.
The reason you kept something in the past may have been a very good reason. It just may not be your reason for keeping it today.
Let Your Home Support This Chapter
This is one of the biggest gifts of organizing: discovering how your home can support the life you’re actually living.
Organizing reaches far beyond the belongings themselves. It touches how you feel when you walk into a room, how easily you move through your morning, and how your household functions throughout the day.
Think about a clear place to pack a suitcase. Baby supplies within comfortable reach. A favorite chair that’s ready when you want to sit down and rest.
Those everyday moments matter.
Start with one small area connected to something you value now. As you look through it, ask, “What helps this part of my life feel easier?” Let that answer guide what stays and how you arrange it. Each thoughtful choice is progress.
Sometimes you have to change your mind in order to change your life. You can honor who you’ve been while making room for who you are now. Every space that works a little better can bring a little more ease—and that’s something worth building on.
