Making Room for What Matters

One of my favorite questions to ask my organizing clients is, “What area would you like us to work on today?” Most people already know the answer before I ever walk through the door. And if they're not quite sure, I ask a few gentle questions instead. What space feels inefficient? Which room makes you sigh every time you walk into it? What area would make you feel the happiest if it were transformed?

The answers are almost always there. Sometimes we just need someone to help uncover them.

Finding the Space That Needs You Most

This morning, I worked with a wonderful client whose answer came quickly: the nursery.

She has the sweetest little baby, not even a year old yet, and like so many first-time parents, she was surrounded by an abundance of love. Along with that love came baby clothes, toys, gear, hand-me-downs, gifts from generous family and friends, and all the wonderful things that naturally arrive with a new baby.

The nursery wasn't messy because anyone had done something wrong. It was overflowing because this little one is deeply loved.

The challenge was that there was simply too much in the room. Instead of feeling peaceful and functional, the nursery had become overwhelming. It was difficult to fully use the room for its most important purpose.

Creating Space for Today While Planning for Tomorrow

The beautiful part was that we didn't need to get rid of everything.

My client had plenty of storage downstairs, so our goal wasn't less—it was more strategic.

When you have too many things in the room where they belong, it's worth asking a few simple questions.

Are there items your family won't need for several more months?

Are there clothes your baby has already outgrown that you'd like to save for a future child?

Are there extras that don't need to be within arm's reach every single day?

By moving those items into nearby storage, we made room for what mattered right now. The diapers, the current-size clothing, the favorite books, the blankets, and the everyday essentials became easy to see and easy to reach.

Even more importantly, we intentionally left open space.

Space for reading together.

Space for favorite stuffed animals.

Space to play.

Space to simply breathe.

Those little pockets of openness make a room feel welcoming instead of crowded, and they make everyday routines feel just a little bit easier.

Your Home Should Support Your Life

A nursery isn't just another room in the house.

It's where countless diapers are changed, bedtime stories are read, sleepy cuddles happen, and quiet moments between parents and their baby become treasured memories.

When your home supports those moments instead of competing with them, everything feels a little calmer.

Whether it's a nursery, a pantry, a closet, or a garage, organizing isn't about making your home look perfect. It's about making your home work beautifully for the life you're living today while thoughtfully preparing for tomorrow.
