Making Room for the Memories

If you’ve ever inherited a loved one’s home while already caring for your own, you know how much can come with the keys. There are memories in every room, belongings to sort through, and decisions that reach far beyond where to put the furniture. When my team and I help a family through this process, one of my favorite moments comes on the final walkthrough day. It’s a chance to pause together and see how much has been taken care of.

A Home Full of Decisions

Some of our larger projects involve helping someone manage a sizable estate. They already have their own home, and suddenly they’re responsible for two, three, or even four properties. One or more may need to be sold, whether to meet the estate’s needs or because the family simply doesn’t need so many homes.

And inside those homes? Thousands and thousands of decisions.

There are treasured photographs, family keepsakes, and meaningful pieces the client knows they want to keep. There are also everyday belongings that served a purpose in their loved one’s life but don’t have a place in their own.

It takes time to sort through all of that. Each decision asks for a little attention and energy, often during a season when both are already stretched.

Caring for the Details Together

Part of our work is helping clients identify what matters most to them and make a thoughtful plan for everything else.

That may mean coordinating with auction houses, estate sale professionals, charities, moving companies, and junk removal teams. We look for opportunities for belongings to be sold, donated, or put to use in another home, and arrange appropriate removal for what remains.

There are a lot of moving pieces. Knowing which partner to bring in, what needs to happen first, and how to keep the process moving is an important part of the support we provide.

Clients can stay involved in the decisions that matter to them while entrusting us with the coordination and follow-through. They have someone helping carry the work from one step to the next.

The Relief of That Final Walkthrough

This is why I love final walkthrough day.

We walk through the home together, and the client gets to see just how much has been accomplished. Rooms that once held so many unanswered questions now reflect decisions made and tasks completed. The belongings they chose to keep have a plan. So do the items going elsewhere.

What often surprises clients most is how much moved forward without their having to personally manage every detail.

That relief means so much to me. Organizing at this scale can give someone time back on their calendar and space in their day to remember, reflect, and be with the people they love.

If you’re navigating an inherited home, you can begin with one manageable decision and accept support along the way. There is room to honor your loved one while making choices that fit your life today. That’s what I find so meaningful about this work—helping people make room for their memories while we care for the details.
