How to Welcome Guests When Your Home Feels Cluttered
Two women chatting over mugs in a cozy living room with a laundry basket and a resting dog.
Have you ever wanted to invite someone over, then looked around your home and thought, “Maybe when I get things organized”? If you have, I want to offer a little encouragement. You can welcome people you love while your home is still a work in progress. Here are three things I would share with you if we were sitting together, talking about where to begin.
They’re Coming to See You
Your friends and dear family members are coming to spend time with you. To hear your stories. To laugh around your table. To enjoy the comfort of being together.
They’re coming for a visit, not a home inspection.
That basket of laundry waiting to be folded doesn’t take away from your warmth. A few stacks of paper don’t erase the pleasure of sharing a meal. You can make someone feel welcome with a place to sit, something to drink, and your attention.
If getting ready feels overwhelming, start small. Clear a comfortable seat and a spot to set a cup. Let that be enough for a relaxed visit.
A Little Help Can Go Both Ways
Some people really enjoy organizing. You may have a friend or family member who would happily help you catch up on laundry or bring a little order to your kitchen.
And maybe that same person loves your pot roast.
You could teach them how to make it while they help you fold a few loads of laundry. Share a recipe, share a task, and enjoy some time together. That sounds like a lovely win-win to me.
If that feels comfortable, try a simple invitation: “Would you like to come over and help me fold laundry? I’ll make dinner, and we can catch up.”
Choose someone whose company puts you at ease, and let them know what kind of help would feel good. You get to set the pace and decide what stays, what goes, and what you’re ready to work on.
You Can Welcome Support Too
And if neither you nor your friends nor your family wants to organize your home, I do.
My team and I love helping people create spaces that feel comfortable and work for their everyday lives. Sometimes that begins with clearing a table. Sometimes it means finding an easy home for the things that keep landing on it.
We work with you, one manageable step at a time.
Here in Louisville, Kentucky, we offer onsite organizing. If you live elsewhere, we can work together virtually. I also know organizers around the country and would be happy to help you find someone closer to home.
You deserve to feel happy in your home—and to enjoy the people you’d love to welcome into it. Every cleared seat or easier-to-use space can make a little more room for connection.
