A Good Book and a Clear Mind

If you've been spending more time indoors lately because the weather has been less than inviting, you might find yourself feeling a little restless. Maybe you've looked around your home and thought about a project you'd like to tackle. Maybe your mind feels as cluttered as the kitchen counter. Or maybe you're simply looking for a way to relax, recharge, and do something meaningful with your time.

When the weather keeps us inside, it can be the perfect opportunity to slow down and care for both our homes and ourselves.

One of My Favorite Ways to Reset

When I need to de-stress, one of my favorite things to do is read.

There is something comforting about settling into a good book while the rain falls outside or the wind rattles the windows. Reading gives us a chance to step away from our own worries for a little while and enter someone else's world.

Fiction, in particular, has a beautiful way of helping us grow in empathy. Through stories, we experience other people's challenges, friendships, hopes, and journeys. We see life from perspectives that may be very different from our own, and that understanding often stays with us long after we've turned the last page.

Expanding More Than Your Bookshelf

Nonfiction offers its own kind of gift.

Whether you're reading history, learning about another culture, exploring a topic you've always been curious about, or listening to a biography, you're expanding your horizons. Every book becomes an opportunity to learn something new and see the world a little differently.

As a professional organizer, I often talk about creating space in our homes. But creating space in our minds is just as important. Reading encourages curiosity, reflection, and growth. It helps us slow down enough to absorb new ideas and connect with the experiences of others.

That's a form of decluttering too—making room for fresh thoughts and new perspectives.

Enjoying Books Without Adding Clutter

One of the wonderful things about reading today is that you don't have to add a single item to your shelves if you don't want to.

Your local library is an incredible resource. You can borrow physical books, of course, but you can also enjoy e-books and audiobooks through apps like Libby. It's a simple way to access thousands of titles without bringing additional items into your home.

For those who are working toward a more organized space, this can be a great solution. You get all the enjoyment, learning, and relaxation that books provide while keeping your home free from excess clutter.

Sometimes the best organizing tools aren't bins or labels. Sometimes they're habits that support a calmer, more intentional life.

The next time you're stuck inside and looking for something to do, consider picking up a book. You might discover a new perspective, learn something fascinating, or simply enjoy a peaceful escape for an hour or two. Small moments like these can help clear our minds, reduce stress, and create a sense of calm that often carries into the rest of our lives.

After all, creating an organized life isn't just about what we remove from our homes. It's also about what we choose to add to our days.
