Why You Should Stop Buying Organizing Supplies (For Now)
If you’re not sure what organizing supplies to buy…
Or you’re trying to avoid spending more right now…
Or maybe you already bought a bunch of bins and baskets and it’s just not working…
Let me offer you something better than another trip to the store: a moment to pause.
Start with Decluttering, Not Shopping
When we begin the decluttering process, we almost always find storage containers we forgot we had—bins, baskets, boxes, tubs—you name it. Once you’ve let go of the things you don’t use, don’t love, or didn’t even remember owning, your existing storage solutions start to show up.
Use What You Already Have
One of the things I love most about professional organizing is helping people get creative with what’s already in their home. A shoebox can be a drawer divider. A pantry jar can corral art supplies. A clear plastic bin from under the bed might be just what you need for your linen closet.
And don’t forget—shelves and drawers are organizing tools too! Sometimes the best organizing “supply” is simply an empty shelf.
Focus on Function First
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by clutter, if the bins you bought don’t seem to be helping, or if you’re trying to stay within budget, here’s your next step:
Let go of what you don’t need. Then look around and see what’s already available. You may not need to spend a single penny on new organizing products.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
If you're still feeling stuck, that’s okay. Finding the right flow and function for a space is one of my favorite parts of being a professional organizer. When I started out, we were literally decoupaging shoeboxes to make them pretty and useful—and that spirit of resourcefulness still guides my work today.
