Transforming a Teacher’s Storeroom into Calm and Order

On a recent project, I had the joy of working with a schoolteacher client—one of my favorite types of clients to help. Teachers give so much of themselves every day, and creating order at home can make such a difference in supporting their busy lives.

This teacher had already taken a huge step toward decluttering: she let go of 14 large bags of clothing—hers and her kids’—that were no longer needed. That decision gave us the space we needed to truly transform her basement storeroom into a place that felt open, functional, and easy to maintain.

One of the reasons this organizing session went so smoothly is because she set us up for success. Before our appointment, I gave her some simple homework: write down anything she already knew she wanted to part with—whether it was clothing, small appliances, or even leftover gift wrap. Since she wasn’t going to be home during the session, this list gave me a clear guide and saved so much time.

During her assessment, she had shared something I hear often: she knows what needs to go, but she feels overwhelmed by the logistics of sorting, bagging, and making the donation drop-offs. That’s completely normal—life is full, and those extra steps can feel like too much. That’s exactly where a professional organizer comes in.

We ended up loading four carloads of donations and dropping them off at her favorite charity, the Mustard Seed. With those items cleared out, I was able to label and organize her entire storeroom so she can now see exactly what she has and access it with ease.

The real takeaway from this project is something I share often with clients: when you declutter down to what you can see, use, and manage, staying organized becomes much easier. It’s never about getting rid of everything—it’s about making sure what remains truly supports your lifestyle and fits into the home you want to create.
