If you've ever opened a storage closet and felt like there couldn't possibly be room for one more thing, you're not alone. So many of my clients tell me they feel frustrated by closets that seem packed to the brim, even though they know there has to be a better way.

Recently, I worked with a wonderful client who thought her storage closet had reached its limit. It was full, difficult to access, and no longer serving her the way she needed it to. But within just a couple of hours, we were able to completely transform the space—and it ended up feeling almost twice as large.

Starting With What Matters

As with most organizing projects, we began by pulling everything out of the closet.

My client was truly ready to make decisions about what she wanted to keep and what no longer needed a place in her home. That willingness to look at each item honestly made all the difference.

Decluttering is almost always the first step. It creates breathing room and helps us see what we're really working with.

She was able to let go of a meaningful percentage of the items in the closet. Not the majority, but enough to create space and clarity. And that's an important reminder: organizing success doesn't require getting rid of everything. Sometimes it's simply about keeping what serves you and creating a better way to store it.

Making the Space Work Harder

Once we knew exactly what needed to stay, we focused on making the closet function better.

The storage totes needed to be reorganized into categories that made sense for how my client actually uses and accesses her belongings. When categories reflect real life, finding things becomes faster and putting things away becomes easier.

The second challenge was that the closet didn't have shelving.

So we assembled a shelving unit and immediately gained valuable vertical storage space. We labeled the totes, grouped similar categories together, and moved everything off the floor. Suddenly, the same items that had felt overwhelming had a clear home.

One of the most overlooked organizing opportunities is vertical space. When we look beyond the floor and begin using the height of a closet, the storage potential can increase dramatically.

The Best Part

When we finished, my client was thrilled.

The closet looked bigger. Everything she wanted to keep was neatly stored and easy to find. She could actually walk into the closet comfortably. And perhaps most exciting of all, there were two completely empty shelves waiting for future needs.

That's one of my favorite organizing moments—not when a space looks perfect, but when it feels peaceful. When a client opens a door and feels relief instead of stress. When they can see what they own and access it with ease.

If you've been avoiding a storage closet because it feels overwhelming, take heart. It is absolutely possible to create more space than you think you have. Sometimes the answer isn't a bigger house or a bigger closet. Sometimes it's simply letting go of what no longer serves you, creating thoughtful categories, and making better use of the space that's already there.

And sometimes, hidden at the bottom of a storage closet, you'll even rediscover things you forgot you owned.

Every organized space begins with one small decision. One item. One shelf. One step forward. Progress doesn't have to happen all at once. The goal isn't perfection—it's creating a home that supports your life and makes daily tasks a little easier. You deserve spaces that feel calm, functional, and welcoming, and with the right approach, those spaces are often much closer than you think.
