The Little Joys That Matter
A hand selecting earrings from an organized jewelry box, showing how thoughtful organization creates space for joy, beauty, and intentional living.
I was getting ready the other day and thought, “Now I’m going to show you my new earrings.” And as simple as that sounds, it actually made me think about something I talk with my organizing clients about all the time.
I don’t have to go home and get rid of one or three pairs of earrings just because I bought a new pair. I already have a collection, yes—but it’s organized. I know what I own. I have space for it. And because of that, bringing something new into my life felt joyful instead of stressful.
That’s such an important difference.
These earrings came from a local woman-owned business called Toasted Oak. Isn’t that the cutest name? I found them at the Mount Washington Spring Fest this past weekend, and it was just lovely. There were people everywhere, music in the air, booths lined up one after another, and so many small businesses sharing what they had created. It felt vibrant and warm and full of life.
And honestly, being there reminded me that organizing isn’t only about decluttering. It’s about creating a life that has room for joy.
Making Space for Happiness
I think sometimes when people are working really hard to get organized, save money, simplify their homes, or take better care of themselves, they can accidentally slip into an all-or-nothing mindset.
No spending.
No fun.
No breaks.
No treats.
No rest until everything is “done.”
But life doesn’t work very well that way.
When we’re working hard on anything—our homes, our schedules, our health, our relationships—we also need moments that refill us. We need sunshine and laughter and community. We need things that remind us we’re human beings, not projects.
Being outside makes me happy.
Being in community makes me happy.
Supporting women entrepreneurs makes me happy.
And yes… earrings make me happy.
Those things matter.
Organized Doesn’t Mean Deprived
One of the beautiful things about getting organized is that it helps you make thoughtful decisions instead of reactive ones.
When your home is functioning well, you can enjoy what you already own. You can clearly see what fits your space, your lifestyle, and your values. And when you do choose to bring something new in, it can feel intentional and peaceful instead of overwhelming.
That’s very different from shopping because you can’t find what you already have.
Or buying duplicates because your systems aren’t supporting you.
Or feeling guilt every time something enters the house.
Organization creates clarity. And clarity creates calm.
I think that’s why I always encourage people to focus less on perfection and more on creating a home that supports the life they actually want to live.
Sometimes that life includes a beautiful pair of earrings from a spring festival.
And that’s okay.
At the end of the day, organizing is not about stripping your life down to nothing. It’s about making room for what genuinely adds beauty, ease, connection, and happiness to your days. A well-organized home can hold both practicality and personality. It can support your goals while still leaving space for delight.
Every organized drawer, every clear countertop, every system that works for your real life is a quiet form of self-care. And sometimes, the little things that make you smile are worth making space for, too.
