Silence the Noise: One Simple Trick to Stay Focused While Organizing
When you’re trying to get organized—whether it’s your home, office, workspace, or even just your mind—creating a little quiet around you makes a huge difference. And by “quiet,” I don’t just mean silencing sounds—I’m talking about reducing distractions, especially the kind that come from our phones.
Here’s a super simple but powerful organizing tip I always share with clients (and use myself!):
🔕 Turn off your phone notifications before you begin an organizing session.
It seems like such a small step, but trust me—it has a big impact. Whether you're:
◈ Tackling a decluttering project,
◈ Setting up a new home organization system, or
◈ Making space for more intentional living—cutting out digital clutter can help you stay focused and present.
Tech Check Before You Organize
Phones can be sneaky. Some apps will automatically turn notifications back on after a restart or update. So before you dive in, take a moment to review your notification settings. Most phones let you see a list of your recent alerts—you can go into each app and temporarily pause the noise.
Use “Do Not Disturb” to Protect Your Focus
This is a game-changer. The Do Not Disturb feature is perfect for protecting your organizing time without disconnecting completely. You can allow calls from specific people—like your kids or team—so you're not totally off the grid but also not getting pulled out of your organizing flow every time your phone buzzes.
Communicate Your Boundaries
If it feels right, tell the people around you:
💬 “Hey, I’m setting aside a few hours this morning to get things in order. I’ll be offline from 9 to noon.”
That simple heads-up does two things:
1. It helps others respect your time, and
2. It reinforces your own focus boundaries.
Organizing Isn’t Just About Stuff
Professional organizing is more than just choosing the right bins and making labels. It’s about creating the mental space to make decisions that align with your life and your goals. When you reduce digital distractions, you’re creating the conditions for clarity, calm, and success.
You’re not just organizing your space—you’re supporting your peace of mind.
