Organizing That Works for Real Life

Wooden shelves with cups of pencils, scissors, and crayons, plus stacked papers and art supplies organized in small containers for easy access.

If you’ve ever opened a drawer, cabinet, or closet and thought, “Now where did I put that?” you’re not alone. It happens to all of us. Life gets busy, routines change, and before we know it, we’re searching for something we know we have—but can’t quite remember where it lives.

One of the simplest and most helpful questions I ask my clients throughout the day is this: “If you were looking for this, where would you look first?” It’s such a small question, but it often unlocks the perfect solution.

The Moment That Changes Everything

I remember hearing organizing expert Dana K. White say something similar in her teaching. She encourages people to ask themselves, “Where would you look first?” when deciding where something should go. That idea has stayed with me for years because it reflects something so beautifully practical about organizing.

When we’re working in a client’s home, I might hold up an item and ask that question. Sometimes there’s a pause. Then suddenly the answer comes easily.

“Oh, I’d check that cabinet first.”

Or, “I’d probably look in that drawer by the stove.”

And that’s our clue.

Organizing Around Real Life

Here’s the important part: the place you would look first might not be the place someone else would choose.

It might not match the kitchen you admired on Pinterest. It might not be the system a friend uses. It might not even be where your spouse would think to look.

And that’s perfectly okay.

Organizing works best when it reflects your natural instincts. If you would look for something in a certain place, that’s exactly where it belongs. When items live where your brain expects them to be, two wonderful things happen: you can find them easily, and you’re much more likely to put them back.

That’s the quiet secret to systems that actually last.

A Gentle Reminder About Inventory

There’s another layer to this idea that’s just as important. Even the most thoughtful organizing system works best when the amount of inventory in your home matches what you can comfortably manage.

When we keep only what fits our space and our lives, it becomes easier to decide where things belong. Drawers close smoothly. Shelves feel calm instead of crowded. And everyday routines become simpler.

Organizing isn’t about creating perfection. It’s about creating a home that supports the life you’re living right now—with the belongings you truly use and value.

Sometimes the best organizing question really is the simplest one.

Where would I look first?

When you answer that honestly, you’re already halfway to a system that works beautifully for you.

Every drawer you open with ease, every shelf that feels calm instead of crowded, and every item that’s easy to find is a small gift you give yourself. A peaceful home isn’t built all at once—it grows through these small, thoughtful decisions that support your daily life.
