Getting Reorganized After a Trip or Event
Coming Home with Calm
If you’ve ever walked back into your home after a vacation, business trip, or special event and felt that little wave of “where do I even start?” — you’re not alone. Getting reorganized after time away doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a few intentional steps, you can restore order, breathe easier, and slip back into your routine with grace.
Here’s how to turn your re-entry into a reset — one gentle step at a time.
Savor the Experience
Before diving into unpacking or laundry, pause and take a moment to be grateful for being home.
Notice how good it feels to be back in your space, surrounded by what’s familiar. Wrap yourself in gratitude for your safe return, your home, and your loved ones.
Take a few minutes to reflect: What moments stood out to you during your trip or event? Who did you connect with? What did you learn or experience that brought joy?
Savoring the closing moments of your experience helps you transition smoothly — it’s an emotional unpacking that sets the tone for everything that follows.
Do a Quick Perishable Sweep
Next, focus on the things that truly can’t wait. These are your quick wins — items that spoil, leak, melt, or create extra work if left unattended. Maybe it’s a cooler still in the car, damp towels in a bag, or a few snacks tucked into your luggage.
Spend just a few minutes addressing these “perishable priorities.”
Then, take a quick sweep through your fridge and pantry. If you notice ingredients or leftovers that won’t be used soon, go ahead and freeze them now. It’s one of the easiest ways to save money, prevent waste, and instantly reduce post-trip chaos.
Put Away Items You’ll Need This Week
Once the perishables are handled, unpack any time-sensitive essentials and put them where you will most easily find them. Your keys, coat, purse, electronic devices, favorite bedtime read, etc. - whatever you use on a weekly or daily basis. Get it exactly where you will find it so you don’t have to hunt for it. If that spot isn’t already intentionally created, here’s a tip to help you remember where it is. Place the item in the first place you would think to look for it. Don’t worry if that spot isn’t what other people do or what you see online; where YOU most easily access it is the perfect spot! Then, pause after you put it away there and “take a picture with your mind” You can even put your hand up to your face and pretend you’re taking an actual photograph, “framing” your object so you recall it more easily. You could even take an actual photo - use the 0.5 setting to zoom out so you can see the surroundings and more easily find where in the house your item is.
Ease Back into Your Routine
Once everything you’re going to need soon is put away, you can unpack everything else right away or over time - whatever meets your needs and feels best to you! Of course, your calendar may dictate one pace or another, but be gentle with yourself. If you need a couple weeks or a slow weekend to get that luggage emptied, take that time. Unless it is in your way, you have houseguests coming, or it makes you happy to get unpacked and reorganized ASAP, you can unpack incrementally. Small but thoughtful steps add up quickly.
Bonus Tip from an Expert Organizer
Professional organizers know that the “coming home” process can be just as mental and emotional as it is physical.
If you feel drained or unmotivated, set a timer for ten or fifteen minutes and tackle just one mini task. A focused burst of action can reset your energy and momentum.
Remember: staying organized isn’t about doing it all — it’s about doing the next right thing with intention and care.
